State of Bengal

The Asian Underground scene which has taken Britain by storm during the last few years was an inevitable musical phenomenon, with a young Anglo-Asian community brought up listening to the sitar and tablas at home and all types of pop music on the radio and in the clubs, the mixing of the two was just bound to happen. Artists such as Nitin Sawhney, Talvin Singh and the collective Transglobal Underground began to experiment with a new-sounding fusion of East and West. In 1987 Sam Zaman took a trip to the village of Noakhali in Bangladesh to work with the local musicians and dancers. Upon his return, he set up a sound system playing Western and Bengali dance music with musicians, dancers and rappers performing. The State of Bengal sound system became a rite of passage for many of the up and coming MCs who would later rise to pop star status with groups such as Fun-Da-Mental and Asian Dub Foundation. Sam, meanwhile, developed a new sound made up of hip hop, breakbeat, classical Indian music and chants. Ten years after his voyage to Bangladesh, Sam''s innovative work and talent as a producer/DJ led to remixes for artists such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Bjork and Massive Attack. Alongside recording the solo album Visual Audio in 1999, State of Bengal increased its stage performances world wide. Occasionally backed by drummer Mark Gilmore laying down live drum''n''bass beats, he opened for Bjork on her Homogenic tour and toured with Ananda Shankar before recording the Ananda Shankar Experience with State of Bengal album. Following his extensive collaboration with the Realworld label in Britain, State of Bengal took part in the WOMAD festival 2000 in Caceres, Spain.
